Welcome to the Moritz Lab!
We conduct basic research into the biochemistry and cell biology of the mechanisms underlying genetically inherited forms of blindness, such as retinitis pigmentosa and macular degeneration.
We are also interested in mechanisms of protein trafficking within photoreceptor cells, and how these mechanisms relate to these genetic disorders.
We use transgenic Xenopus laevis photoreceptors as an expression system both for modeling disease processes, and for investigations of protein transport processes.
We are located in the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, BC, Canada. We are part of the Centre for Macular Research, a virtual centre dedicated to researching debilitating disorders of the retina.
